When looking for an e-mail program, most people do not look beyond Outlook, the e-mail program that comes for free with the Windows operating system. While certainly a full-function e-mail client, Outlook has had many reported problems with security and viruses. Because of this, many individuals are looking for alternatives.

There are many excellent alternatives to Microsoft Outlook that are available for free. Many of these products have very innovative features that users will appreciate. These products may also be less susceptible to the security issues that have plagued Outlook Express.

Whatever the reason that you may be looking for another e-mail package, any of the following would be an excellent choice as an alternative to Microsoft Outlook:

Mozilla

The Mozilla open source software project is an open source community of developers and testers whose mission is to reserve choice and innovation on the Internet.

Mozilla Thunderbird

Thunderbird is Mozilla's premier e-mail offering. Thunderbird is available for Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux, and is absolutely free. It is getting very favorable reviews.

Mozilla Suite

The Mozilla Suite provides a Web browser, advanced e-mail and newsgroup client, IRC chat client, and HTML editor. It too is available for free. The Mozilla Suite is available for Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux.

Eudora Email

Eudora Email provides an e-mail program that can be run in one of three modes. The first mode, "paid mode", is fully functional but costs $49.95. The second mode, "sponsored mode", is free and has most of the functionality of paid mode along with an ad window and sponsored toolbar links. The third mode, "light mode" is free but less functional than the other two modes. All three modes are available in the same program. The user simply selects which mode they wish to run. Eudora Email runs on Windows XP, Windows 2000, Windows 98, Windows ME, and Windows NT 4.0, as well as Mac OS X.

Opera Mail

The Opera Browser comes with built-in POP/IMAP E-Mail, Opera Mail, that is is a combined e-mail program, news reader, mailing list organizer and RSS/Atom newsfeed reader. Opera is available for free and runs on Windows, Solaris Sparc, QNX, OS/2, MacOS, Linux Sparc, Linux PowerPC, Linux i386, FreeBSD i386, and BeOS.
